St. Benedict’s Preparatory School
Benedictine monks came to Newark in 1857 to serve the German community of Saint Mary’s parish. Seeing the need for a school to educate the sons of the growing working-class Catholic population in Newark, the monks opened St. Benedict’s College in 1868. Throughout the years, as the neighborhood around St. Benedict's changed and the needs of its students changed, St. Benedict’s evolved. The hallowed halls of SBP, once filled with primarily Catholic, Caucasian young men, now hold students of every race and religion - girls, too, are now part of St. Benedict's Prep tradition.
Because many of the students have faced significant challenges related to chronic poverty and racism - more than half are from low income families and almost 90% are on full or partial scholarship - St. Benedict’s emphasizes building a supportive community as much as academic excellence. The mission to continue to build the character and integrity of the young men and women of Newark has been evidenced by the dedication of the monks who are committed to the youth of the city, and the results of the students themselves with an almost perfect graduation rate and 98% attending college.
